From The Univ. of Akron- on Winning The National Commitment to Diversity Award. One of the programs we highlighted from the 2011-2012 year was ANT's Bullied, Bashed, but Never Broken presentation that he did for us! This was not only well received by the campus community, but also those reviewing the awards.
Hyper, irreverent, and just downright fabulous, ANT (spelled in caps) has steadily climbed the comedy hill to become one of the most successful comedians of our time. A regular guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Tyra Banks show, ANT is the only comedian to appear on all five seasons of NBC's hit series Last Comic Standing. He is recognized as the host VH1's Celebrity Fit Club and in the LOGO series, "U.S. of ANT." ANT ventured out of his comfort zone, appearing in "Celebri-Cadabra." a competition show featuring magic and celebrities. His hit stand-up DVD, "ANT: America's Ready" and comedy CD "Follow my ass!" have sold tens of thousands of copies and are available in stores nationwide and online at every CD/DVD retailer including amazon.com. ANT's daily video blog, "The ANT Colony," has taken the web by storm. Consistently rated as one of the top 10 celebrity blogs on MySpace and at mirror site www.nbc.com/ant, www.nbc.com/ant. The ANT Colony garners over a million visitors per month. www.antcomic.com/blog
The lecture- BULLIED BASHED BUT NOT BROKEN
Floundering in life for years, ANT moved to Los Angeles seeing fame and fortune. He began to run with a fast, party crowd and soon his world started unraveling. BULLIED at school for being different- gay, of immigrant parents, having funny lunches (everyone can fill in their own blanks) and peer pressure highlighting the need to fit in lead him into a dark dance with the devil. Years of alcohol, Meth.,and Heroin abuse brings him to the brink of insanity. Almost homeless, desperate for a way out, he chooses suicide. But life had another plan.
ANT's amazing journey will take you through - self-doubt, internalized homophobia, depression and chemical dependency. And when he hits rock bottom...The light – inside all of us - began to shine.
What follows next is an unforgettable journey from hell to happiness. A visitor from above or the most vivid dream he's ever had, lead him to the path of recovery. His is a story of hope and redemption. He'll reveal how each of us has an infinite power and infinite potential within us.
The ability to command into existence anything we desire. Tears, Laughter and Triumph. Your change starts now.
Currently ANT lives in Los Angeles and has been clean and sober for nearly 6 years.
And most powerfully of all, they hear Ant tell the story of his longtime relationship with his partner, and of the mix of funny and sad moments that seasoned his last year, before dying last November of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
“I’m sharing the pain of my true experiences with you not only to honor him, but also to show that I’m willing to put it all up on the stage, just like I’m asking you to,” says Ant. “If you bring real truth to the stage about who you are, it will be unique and funny and heartfelt and memorable.”
I have never dealt with a nicer celebrity than Ant. He was so humble and grounded which made my job much easier. He barely requested anything and he was more than happy to meet people and sign autographs. He asked as many people as he could to go out to dinner with us after the show. At dinner he was just as funny as he was in his show and he gave us students genuine advice. He bought everyone at dinner drinks and he was even respectful at 5 am when I took him back to the airport. I would love to have him back anytime. I wanted to send him a thank you note. Can you send me his address so I can send him the thank you note, or can you send me your address so you can send him the thank you note? I greatly appreciate your sincerity and professionalism on Ant.
