Bob Bralove & Tom Constanten
Grateful Dead alumni Bob Bralove and Tom Constanten
Classical and Rock Concerts, Residencies, Lectures, Art Exhibits and Installations
Concerts are multimedia performances in video and music, of new and vintage material.
Concerto Psychedelico
Original Orchestral works performed with high school/college student orchestras and Dose Hermanos. Residencies include rehearsals with students and the composers, as well as lecture/demonstration programs in music, art and technology. Dose Hermanos uses state of the art computer technology to create an organic soundworld. With video information mapped onto a MIDI keyboard, the same gesture triggers both sound and image. With each note played, the duo is actually painting and performing a movie – live! Dose Hermanos calls this “digital fingerpainting”
These two keyboard masters met in the creative vortex of the Grateful Dead. Tom played with them in the sixties, and Bob was the MIDI wizard, producer, and co-writer with the band for the last eight years of the long, strange trip.
Bralove, who has a Masters Degree in composition, is especially well known for his undeniable creative sound, present onstage with the Grateful Dead, during the mind-bending “Drums and Space” segments. Prior to working with the Grateful Dead, he was the MIDI wizard and sound designer for Stevie Wonder.
Constanten, in addition to being a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, was a composition student of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luciano Berio, and Artist in Residence at Harvard University. He has produced numerous solo albums of both classical and contemporary music. Together, the duo soon found a common vocabulary. Both having backgrounds in classical music, jazz, avant garde, and rock and roll, they are equally at home in the style of Bartok or Stravinsky, as the Blues or gamelan.
“optimistic, mixing new-music experimentalism with bits of pop textures and elements of the blues, as if the pianists had uncovered some archaic musical form and quoted it.” -The New York Times
“Since Constanten has taught 20th century music at the State University of New York at Buffalo and Harvard, and Bralove has his master’s degree in classical music, this won’t be just about rock’n’roll.” - The Times Herald Record
